Tectus cf fenestratus
(Gmelin, 1791)
37mm
This
species does not quite fit any of the known Tectus species. Its shape
is similar to T. pyramis,
but has several rows of nodules on the whorls. The nodules are similar to T.
triserialis, but the shell tends to be too wide and the largest row
of nodules is right at the suture rather than back from it a bit. The sutural
nodules are like those of T. fenestratus, a species that appears thicker
and heavier. For now we are leaving it as T. cf fenestratus
but that is subject to change. Tectus cf fenestratus is common
in the Marshalls on a range of intertidal, lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs,
where they live on and under rocks and in ledges on the hard substrate.
A younger specimen with strong
nodules at the sutures.
